I didn’t understand fully understand the fascination and the emotions one goes through while they wait for the ‘two pink lines’ until I had to go through it myself.
Peeing on a tiny rectangle box and then waiting for your result is like watching a thriller, family entertainer and romance movie all at once. And, while the result can cause much happiness and/or trepidation, the reality is that the journey doesn’t start when the two pink lines show up but much before.
Ours started on our wedding day itself when a stranger from my in-laws side asked me on the stage if I had decided when I would get pregnant. As if that wasn’t bad enough, our building neighbour in his speech later that night suggested that we could ‘use his red car’ – it was rumoured that whoever sat in his car got pregnant right away – anytime we liked and that it was part of his gift to us.
A year into my marriage when I started the Bawi Bride Kitchen I’d have clients calling to give feedback, tell me I was doing a great job spreading the Parsi name through the blog and then suggest I take my community service a step further and procreate for the Parsi Kom. Thank you Jiyo Parsi for your lovely campaigns which only added to this phenomenon!
A couple of years in, BawaGroom and I decided to start trying seriously and for me, that’s when the ‘two pink line’ game got real. Every month that I was late I’d debate mentally if it was too early to go buy a test. And then, if I did buy one, I’d delay peeing on it as I really wasn’t sure if I wanted to know the result or not. It was like being a teenager again and playing the ‘Will he or won’t he call game’ where a thousand useless thoughts are constantly flying around in your brain.
When I was three weeks late in January, I quietly snuck out of bed at 5 in the morning and decided to once again pee on the stick. With my eyes screwed shut tight and my heart thumping wildly I waited the requisite four minutes. When the time was up, I blinked one eye open and then rushed back to bed.
Sleepily, #BawaGroom asked me if everything was alright and what I was doing in the bathroom for so long. Turning towards him I quietly whispered back, “There’s two pink lines. I think we are pregnant”.
