The first I heard about a sleep sack was when I saw an advertisement for one of them on social media. The tiny baby looked like a little butterfly in his sleep sack and was sleeping so soundly that I was sold.
So basically, I bought my first sleep sack on a whim to ensure my baby looked cute too. It’s only after using them for a bit that I’ve realized how amazing they are! When I went to New Zealand earlier this year, these sleep sacks were available in every store and I became a bit of an addict, I must confess. In fact, for a very short period I was more enamoured with sleep sacks than I was with buying new kinds of cloth diapers!
So, without further ado, here is why I simply love sleep sacks!
1. Startle Reflex
M had a really strong startle reflex that lasted till he was almost 4 months old. While I used to swaddle him at night, I disliked keeping him swaddles the whole day too as I felt it was too restrictive for him. His sack allowed him to assume his natural sleep position with his arms up while also giving him room to move. Added bonus, my butterfly looked absolutely adorable!
When we went to New Zealand it was still quite cool for this Mumbai baby of mine and I was worried about putting him to sleep with blankets in his crib, especially as he had now started to shake his arms around and potentially cover his head with the blanket unknowingly. Mum bought me a lovely Merino wool sleep sack from a lock farmers’ market and then we no longer had to worry about this at all. Added bonus, this sack had buttons on the side rather than a zip so I could actually still ‘tuck in’ his arms at night to prevent his reflex from waking him up.
3. No more bugs
A few weeks back we travelled to our family home in Karjat and there were bugs aplenty! Luckily, I also have a long sleeve cotton sleep sack in my stash. This meant M was covered from neck to toe and I didn’t have to worry about any bugs landing on his body. Added bonus, he looks cute in this sleep sack, especially with cake on his nose!
4. Cool cover for Summer
Mumbai is perpetually hot but especially so in April & May. For this, I added a Muslin sleep sack to my collection which is sleeveless and has room for lots of movement. This is just the perfect amount of cover for M so that he doesn’t feel cold with the air conditioning in our room. Added bonus, on days when we don’t have the AC on I just put him in a t-shirt and the easy zipper means diaper changes at night/early morning are super easy.
Do you own a sleep sack? If not, I strongly recommend you give one a go as I have never seen a piece of clothing that is so cute yet so versatile at the same time!
