One of the big things the parenting world is split upon is on finding out the baby’s gender prior to the baby being born. Modern technology has enabled doctors to accurately tell the gender when the baby is just over 12 weeks old.
In India ofcourse finding out the baby’s gender is actually a punishable offense thanks to the almost morbid rate of female infanticide. Now, while Kareena Kapoor couldn’t resist flying to London to find out her baby’s gender I actually just didn’t want to know. I know that not knowing makes planning hard. But, the way I see it is that having a baby is one of life’s greatest surprises. A fool-proof surprise that I am going to love either way.
Ofcourse this meant that the family spent most of the nine months I was pregnant trying to guess the baby’s gender. I had an aunty tell me it would be a girl as I had wide hips while another dangled a thread above my tummy and said it would be a boy. And then there is the internet which has gender prediction calculators galore. However, from all the theories I heard the three below were the most hilarious. Should you use them to predict the gender of your baby? Well, why don’t you read and find out.
The direction in which your husbands head was facing when you conceived
I laughed so hard when I first heard this one. An old uncle at the Parsi gymkhana we regularly visit asked my husband if he remembered which direction his head was facing when we had sex to conceive Baby M. Apparently if Bawa Groom was facing the left it would be a boy and if he was looking over my right shoulder it would be a girl! This theory throws up so many questions I question it’s accuracy. How would one know the exact date that the baby was conceived. Should you now also keep a track of hubby’s head each time you have sex. And most importantly, what would happen if your husband looked in both directions in one session?
The roundness of your tummy
Going by this theory if you have a round tummy then it’s a boy and if your behind is protruding then it’s a girl. This presented a strange problem for me as for most of my pregnancy I had no discernible baby bump and the less said about my flat behind the better. So what would the gender of my baby be I wondered? Personally this theory is quite flawed especially for plump girls like me who already have bumps in the wrong places. However, I must admit that it worked out for my skinnier sister in law whose football like tummy indeed yielded a nephew for me.
Size of your breast
Breasts becoming bigger is one of the first indications that you’re about to become a mom. And, in the final months my breasts had grown so much that I used to joke I would require a separate passport for them when traveling! According to this if your right breast is bigger than the left then it is a boy and vice versa. What do you do if they are both the same? Break out the ruler to measure them? Well, for this you will have to go back in time and discuss the theory with Hippocrates who came up with it.
